Elf star Zooey Deschanel has shared a sweet little throwback to the iconic Christmas movie that fans will no doubt love.

Deschanel played Jovie in the 2003 festive flick directed by Jon Favreau. Jovie is an unenthusiastic staff member at Gimbels who is forced to dress as an elf in the Christmas department and put up decorations.

She's not a lover of Christmas at first but Will Ferrell's Buddy reignites her Christmas passion as the two spark a romance. At one point in the movie, however, the Gimbels manager and Jovie's boss (Faizon Love), makes a demand from Jovie.

He asks her to curl ribbons into six inches to add to the already-extravagant Christmas decorations in the department store. Deschanel put up a funny reference to this moment in an Instagram post with two images of her in the movie in that scene.

Deschanel captioned the post: "When he asks for 6 inch ribbon curls… (that’s impossible)."

Elf returned to our screens in two unexpected ways this year. Firstly, Asda utilised Will Ferrell's Buddy in its Christmas advert this year, while another Christmas movie referenced Elf.

Spirited, which stars Will Ferrell as the Ghost of Christmas Present, features a throwaway gag to Buddy the Elf. The director of that movie, Sean Anders, said: "I was not comfortable putting an Elf character in there without [Ferrell's permission]."

"And before we could even suggest that, Will actually thought, 'Well, shouldn't there be, you know, since the movie takes place in a world where A Christmas Carol exists, we might as well have this reference to Elf'," Anders said.

"And so that was ultimately Will's idea. And it's a huge laugh whenever you see it with an audience and a lot of fun to reference!"

Elf is now available to watch on Sky Cinema and Amazon Prime Video.
