Zendaya will provide the voice for Lola Bunny in the upcoming film Space Jam: A New Legacy, as the director plans to make Lola "as full a character as the others".
"Welcome to the Jam, @Zendaya," the film's official Twitter account posted over the weekend.
Director Malcolm D. Lee recently revealed he is on a mission to introduce a more "fully-realised" and less "objectified" Lola to the reboot, which will be led by LeBron James. The Girls Trip filmmaker wants to "reflect the authenticity of strong, capable female characters" and disclosed that Lola will be reintroduced alongside the Amazons of Wonder Woman.
"Lola was not politically correct," he told Entertainment Weekly of the 1996 original film. "This is a kids' movie, why is she in a crop top? It just felt unnecessary, but at the same time there's a long history of that in cartoons."
In the 1996 Space Jam movie, Lola Bunny is introduced as Bugs Bunny's girlfriend who shows off her basketball skills, but has to be rescued by Bugs when she's almost injured during a basketball game.
"We reworked a lot of things, not only her look, like making sure she had an appropriate length on her shorts and was feminine without being objectified, but gave her a real voice," Lee continued. "For us, it was, let's ground her athletic prowess, her leadership skills, and make her as full a character as the others."
The Euphoria star joins the cast which includes Khris Davis, Sonequa Martin-Green and Cedric Joe.
