Penn Badgley from Netflix's You has revealed the advice he received from directors on how to make his masturbation scenes feel authentic.
The actor recently opened up about the graphic nature of some of his acting roles, touching on how he's masturbated "so many times" as the character of Joe Goldberg in You.
Speaking on the Stitcher's Podcrushed podcast, he shared, "It's a strange—you don't think it's going to be that big of a deal. And then you discover in front of a crew of people with a camera on your face, knowing that, in all likelihood, millions of people are going to see this, you're simulating masturbation."
The actor noted that he finds it more difficult than other types of sex scenes, because their isn't another person to rely on, but that he's been given some key advice on how to make it feel authentic.
"I've always gotten the note to make it less creepy," he continued. "They say like, 'Close your eyes or go faster or go slower.' I'm like, 'What? This man is f***ing murder people, and he's masturbating in the street. You're saying I'm making it creepy? How is it I'm the one making it creepy?'"
You director Lee Toland Krieger "was like, 'Buddy, I think you gotta close your eyes'... He was very graciously communicating that it was creepy. I'm like, 'That's the f***ing.. that's the point.'"
The more you know, eh?
You seasons 1 - 3 are available to stream on Netflix.
