Congress President Sonia Gandhi has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi urging him to provide free food grains to the poor and needy for another three months till September. Noting that ‘millions of Indians are at risk of slipping into poverty’, she asked the PM to issue temporary ration cards.
On May 14, 2020, as part of the second tranche of economic stimulus package, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman had announced that the government will spend Rs 3,500 crore for providing free food grains and pulses for two months to 8 crore migrant workers who don’t hold any ration card. She has also said that migrant workers who don’t have a ration card will be given monthly ration of 5 kg of rice or wheat per person and one kg of chana per family free of cost for next two months.
However, with no sign of the virus subsiding, Congress leader Sonia Gandhi has now proposed to the Modi govt to extend this provision until September. Do you agree with Sonia Gandhi’s ask of the Modi-govt? Should the government provide free food at least till September? Share your comments below.
