After the critically acclaimed Your Name and Weathering With You, Makoto Shinkai is set to return again with his newly announced anime movie Suzume No Tojimari, which literally means Suzume’s Door-Closing. The film's English title is Sparrow's Door Closure.

Shinkai has been consistently producing anime films every three years, with Your Name in 2016 and Weathering With You in 2019. Suzume No Tojimari will be greeting the Japanese audience in the fall of 2022.

Shinkai, who is writing and directing the movie, said on his Twitter that Suzume No Tojimari is an “action movie” with a “modern adventure story,” and that it is going to be an “entertaining movie.”

The released teaser art features a mysterious white door in the centre of a pond among dilapidated buildings.

Set in the abandoned parts of Japan, Suzume No Tojimari is a road movie that depicts the liberation and growth of a girl named Suzume. After discovering she has the power to close supernatural “doors” that cause disasters around Japan, she embarks on a journey to prevent the catastrophes before they occur.

Apart from Shinkai, character designer Masayoshi Tanaka from Your Name and Weathering With You, animation director Kenichi Tsuchiya from Your Name and Weathering With You, and art director Takumi Tanji from Your Name will be returning as well.

The planning and development for Suzume No Tojimari began as early as January 2020, and the animation production started in April. There is no word yet about the international release.
