YouGov survey ranking classic British food sparks outrage online as pork pies among least popular and sausage rolls not included

A survey ranking Britain's favourite classic dishes has sparked outrage online after scotch eggs and pork pies were listed among the nation's least favourite foods.

The YouGov poll also placed treasured dishes such as beef wellington and steak and kidney pie in the lower tier of the classic British foods chart, while sausage rolls were not included.

Yorkshire puddings came out top in the "God tier", followed by Sunday roasts, fish and chips, crumpets and a full English breakfast.

In what YouGov described as a "distressingly beige chart", bangers and mash, cottage pie and shepherd's pie were ranked as "top tier".

Meanwhile, black pudding, kippers, liver and onion, jellied eels and haggis trailed behind in the "crap tier".

The poll prompted fury on social media, with many questioning the lack of sausage rolls and the ranking of some foods.

"Haggis is one of the greatest foods ever given to this country. Absolute heathens," one person said on Twitter.

One person hitting out at steak and kidney pudding's rating claimed he hasn't "felt more disconnected from my fellow Briton since the Brexit vote".

"Surprised scotch eggs did so badly. Nonsense," one wrote, while others branded the chart "a disgrace".

Greggs' Twitter account even weighed into the debate to question where the sausage rolls are.

The results from YouGov reveal that men are noticeably more likely than women to enjoy steak and kidney pudding (63 per cent versus 47 per cent), black pudding (56 per cent versus 38 per cent) and steak and kidney pie (58 per cent versus 40 per cent).

For their part, women are more likely to say they appreciate cauliflower cheese (76 per cent versus 62 per cent).

On the sweet list, scones and victoria sponge cake made the "God tier", while hot cross buns, sticky toffee pudding, Bakewell tart and Eton mess ranked in the second-best category.

Mid-tier contenders were trifle, mince pies, bread and butter pudding and banoffee pie, while the deep-fried Mars bar was classed the most unpopular and Battenberg was placed in the "low tier".

"Well somebody has clearly never tried a deep-fried Mars bar," one responded, while others lashed out at the lack of apple crumble.

Another said: "If your bread and butter pudding is only mid-tier, you're doing it wrong."
