Anyone who has ever been on a road trip with friends will probably give credit to Britney Spears in ‘Crossroads’ for being the ultimate goals when it came to cruising cross-country with your mates.
While we didn’t quite have the open top car that blew wind through our hair - partly because we couldn’t afford one and British weather is crap – we were more than happy to spend our teenage years bungling our friends into a Volkswagen polo and heading for the road.
It’s been 14 years since ‘Crossroads’ hit our screens but this doesn’t mean that road trips need to be a distant memory from our youth.
There is still a lot to be said for speeding along the motorway (within 70mph of course) with your BFF.
It will definitely bring you closer together
Okay, so we admit driving along the M25 probably won’t be this big journey of self-discovery like Britney and her gang of badass besties, but you will learn a lot about yourself and each other — because let’s face it, you don’t really know your mate until you’ve both bonded whilst peeing roadside.
You’ll find new ways to entertain each other
If you can survive five hours of ‘I Spy’ and the nonsensical conversations you have whilst trying to keep the driver awake following a long days drive, then you’ll be best friends for LIFE.
At some point you’ll think about starting a pop group
That ever-faithful NOW ‘99 CD you’ve got on repeat will at some point make you think you could legitimately start a pop group. Mainly because over the last five hours you’ve belted out the lyrics to ‘C’est La Vie’ and learnt all the appropriate harmonies (or so you thought!)
Getting lost makes the best adventures
Getting lost is inevitable but when you’re with your best mate you suddenly learn to embrace these short-comings as just another hilarious story to tell when you get home.
Pit stops at dubious service stations results in 10 new Facebook friends.
Of course, pit stops at random service stations add to the adventure, and what brings people together more than coffee? After half an hour, you and your bestie will have shared adventures with some friendly travellers, and promise to link up on your travels — even though you have no intention of doing so. Nonetheless, you’re happy for the new Instagram followers.
Extra pennies saved on flights = MORE FUN TIMES
The best thing about road trips is they are so much more cost-effective than jetting off to somewhere exotic, which leaves you extra money to see the sights the country has to offer. It might not be as glamorous as sunning yourself in Marbella but the memories are much more hilarious.
Nothing tests your friendship more than hungover journeys home.
Driving home the day after a raucous night out will be the ultimate test of patience and will undoubtedly result in some bickering. But don’t worry, tying back the hair of hungover passengers will reassure you just how great friends you really are.
You’ll laugh your way through a crisis
You haven’t seen comedy, until your banger finally decides to kick the bucket. Desperately trying to figure out what’s wrong with your vehicle only results in giggling fits, and you can bet your bottom dollar someone will attempt to flag down a hot guy to give you a jumpstart.
Ultimately, you’ll call AA and be thankful for the ride home.
