New York Fashion Week has started - so what will be the highlights
New York Fashion Week is underway, kicking off a month-long series of shows which will see the fashion circus move from the US, to London, to Milan and finally Paris. There was already plenty of drama before a single model took to the catwalk, as several brands decided to up sticks and take their shows to Los Angeles, while the usual game of musical chairs continued and many designers have switched places at the top fashion houses. Here’s what you need to know...
When is New York Fashion Week?
New York Fashion Week is running from Thursday 9th February until Thursday 16th February 2017. The majority of designers will be presenting their autumn 2017 collections, which will hit shops in September, although some present see-now-buy-now ranges, available to buy straight off the runway.
What are the headline acts?
Former Dior designer Raf Simons presents his debut collection for Calvin Klein today - an agenda-setting show that everyone will be talking about. The rest of the week then shapes up quite nicely with appearances from Ralph Lauren (15th), Marc Jacobs ( 16th), Michael Kors (15th) and Jonathan Saunders' second range for Diane Von Furstenberg (12th). Plus tune in to our live blog from the Victoria Beckham runway at 2pm GMT on Sunday 12th, as we report directly from the front row.
What are the other highlights?
Design duo Monse have taken over at Oscar de la Renta and will present their debut collection on Monday 13th, plus cult accessories line Mansur Gavriel is expanding into ready-to-wear and will present their first offering on Wednesday 15th.
Which designers have fled for Los Angeles?
One of New York’s biggest names, Tommy Hilfiger, staged his show on Venice Beach a few days before NYFW kicked off, and Rachel Comey, Rebecca Minkoff and a few other labels have also decamped. You can blame Tom Ford for the disruption, as he set the precedent when he moved first in February 2015, explaining that more of his Hollywood clients would be based there.
When is the Kanye West show?
Usually Kanye causes chaos, picking his time slot on the schedule at the last minute and leaving editors scrambling to change their flights. He’s previously bulldozed younger brands, too, by presenting his headline-grabber at the same time as their small-scale presentations - and the Council of Fashion Designers of America has finally told him off. As such, Kanye will present on Wednesday 15th. If he behaves, that is.
