Last night in New York, inside the American Museum of Natural History, The Bear star Ayo Edebiri was hyping up fellow actor Cynthia Erivo in front of inanimate elephants. “It’s too good! It’s TOO good!!” Edebiri exclaimed while Erivo posed for photos in her Thom Browne look. They were waiting for the 2023 CFDA Fashion Awards to begin in the Hall of Ocean Life, underneath the museum’s iconic blue whale model.

Edebiri and Erivo were two among many illustrious guests at last night’s 68th annual event, an award ceremony where the Council of Fashion Designers of America honored both rising and established talent across the country’s fashion landscape. Others in attendance at what has become known as the “Oscars of Fashion” included Kim Kardashian, Lola Tung, Chloë Sevigny, Teyana Taylor, and Martha Stewart.

Among the bold-faced names and against the spectacular backdrop of the museum, however, the real VIPs were the designers. The 2023 honorees included Maria Cornejo, who received the Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Award; Mara Hoffman, who received the Sustainability Award; Vera Wang, honored for her bridal work with the Board of Directors Tribute; and Jonathan Anderson, who received the International Designer of the Year award—and whose Loewe gown Edebiri was wearing. The Founder’s Award in Honor of Eleanor Lambert went to Domenico De Sole, chairman of Tom Ford International.

Gwyneth Paltrow, wearing a dress by Goop’s very own G. Label, took home the Innovation Award, and Serena Williams, wearing a black Thom Browne gown with an oversize satin boa covered in crystals, became the first athlete to receive the fashion icon award.

The ceremony was certainly far more star-studded than in years past. But despite the glitz and glamour of the evening, current CFDA chairman Browne used his speech to emphasize what really mattered most: “Coming together as a collective to champion creativity, diversity, and inclusion within our American industry.”
