Fans of Liberty X back in the day will recognise the new Wet Wet Wet frontman announced today.

Kevin Simm, 38, who also won The Voice in 2016, will take on the leading role in the Scottish band, best known for their 1960 hit Love Is All Around.

The original lead singer Marti Pellow quit the band in 1999 to pursue solo projects, also going on to star in several Broadway and West End productions including Chess and The Witches of Eastwick.

The band reformed in 2004, but split again in 2017 claiming that he could not give '100% heart and soul to meet the demands of Wet Wet Wet and our fans'.

Today, however, the band revealed its new frontman in an announcement posted on their social channels.

A spokesperson for the band said: ‘ANNOUNCEMENT: Graeme, Tommy and Neil are delighted to welcome Kevin Simm as the new singer of Wet Wet Wet. Kevin is best known for his time in Liberty X and as winner of the 2016 series of The Voice.’

Kevin Simm first shot to fame in the 2001 ITV talent show Popstars. Whilst he didn’t quite make the last five, who went on to form the band Hear’Say, Simm and the other four runners up went on to form the successful band Liberty X. They enjoyed 10 top 10 singles, including their biggest hit Just a Little in 2002.

After the band broke up, Simm reappeared in the BBC talent show The Voice, going on to win the 2016 title.

In the announcement, bass player Graeme Clark explains that the moment Kevin sang with the group it was obvious that he was the man for the job.

‘From the first song we played together, Julia Says, we knew instantly, I knew pretty much in the first 30 seconds. He puts me back in touch with that soul feeling we had when we first started,’ he said.

Keyboard player Neil Mitchell agreed, adding, ‘It just worked, it just seems natural to me.’

Kevin is equally effusive of the band saying, ‘I was really taken aback, the opportunity to join a band with such amazing songs and great guys and a great fanbase really excites me.

‘When I first started gigging around the pubs and clubs up North two songs that were always in my set were Goodnight Girl and Love Is All Around.’

The newly-formed band also announced that they will be playing two intimate shows at Saint Luke's & The Winged Ox’s Glasgow on 16th November and 229 The Venue London on 20th November 2018.
