Lockdown has helped women become more confident in their skin than ever before, according to a recent survey of over 10,000 participants.
Conducted by the beauty subscription box retailer Glossybox, the research asked 10,100 women aged over 18 to assess the impact that the coronavirus restrictions have had on their relationship with their appearance.
The majority (59 per cent) reported they now feel more confident in their own skin, due to weeks of refocusing their beauty routines at-home – an unexpected but welcome benefit of lockdown.
In a further display of increased self-assuredness, 75 per cent of those surveyed would now leave the house completely make-up free or wearing less than they did before, an almost 40 per cent increase.
Working from home has given many women an opportunity to take a break from wearing make-up, which 58 per cent used to do every single day, and a significant majority are now wearing fewer cosmetics and spending less time applying them.
In make-up's place, we are focusing more on our skincare regimes, with over a quarter also trying new products, and almost a third spending more money on them than usual. In fact, the research suggests that our skincare routines are increasingly being framed as an integral part of self-care, with 60 per cent focusing on their skincare regimes.
This goes against the traditional trend that sees cosmetics sales increase in times of uncertainty – known as the 'Lipstick Effect' – suggesting that a shift towards caring for, not covering, our complexions is transforming our self-confidence too.
“We’re big promoters in self-care and self-confidence, so we’re glad to hear that more women feel confident in their own skin as a result of taking more time for themselves in lockdown,” says the head of Glossybox UK and Ireland, Francesca Britton. “Our subscribers have told us they have been using Glossybox as something to look forward to each month, so we’re delighted to have brought some positivity and moments of joy into their lives in these difficult times.”
