Woman wins thousands at slot machine, but can’t claim it after casino writes down wrong Social Security number
Americans pour millions of dollars each year into slot machines in the hopes of hitting the big jackpot. So you’d think that if a jackpot winner actually hit the triple cherries, she would be paid what she is owed. Unfortunately, due to an error made by a casino, that isn’t always the case.
Cynthia Obie won thousands on a slot machine at the MGM National Harbor casino in Oxon Hill, Md., on Friday night; however, she didn’t end up leaving with her winnings because the casino wrote down her Social Security number incorrectly, according to Fox 2.
Obie, who witnessed the slot machine symbols lining up perfectly, was ecstatic when she won. “I need this money,” she told the news outlet. Obie didn’t wish to disclose the exact amount of her winnings.
She had always dreamed of winning big, and that night chance was in her favor — or so it seemed. MGM, before it could give Obie her winnings, needed her ID and personal information, which is normal when you win a large amount of money.
Sadly, they took down her Social Security number incorrectly, by one digit.
According to Fox 2, the Social Security number entered belonged to a person who owed the state of Maryland a lot of child support. As a result, Obie’s winnings were immediately confiscated.
“I’m like, no, all of my daughters are grown. I’ve never paid child support. I’m like, this can’t be right,” she told the outlet.
According to MGM, the mistake is out of their hands. Obie will now have to handle the situation with the Gaming Control Agency.
MGM told Fox 2: “We are aware of this unfortunate error and have taken the necessary steps to assist Ms. Obie in rectifying this issue. Due to MLGCA rules and Maryland State Law, we cannot provide an additional payout for this jackpot; however, if she presents the proper identification credentials to the Maryland Gaming Commission, they will provide her with the appropriate payout. We apologize for the inconvenience this has caused Ms. Obie.”
In the meantime, the casino gave Obie $200 in free play and some drink vouchers.
As far as how she’s feeling, Obie said, “Frustrated, but now I’m at the point, this is insane. You guys are a billion dollar corporation, you do the research. I won fair and square. I just want my money.”
