Woman Says Brother Is ‘Aggravated’ After She Won’t Co-Sign for His Luxury Car: He ‘Has Put Himself into Debt’
He has “wasted so much money on different cars” over the years the woman shared in a recent Reddit post
A Redditor says she refused to co-sign for her brother’s luxury car, and he’s “been annoyed” with her ever since.
The woman shared her experience on Reddit’s “Am I the A------?” forum — a place where users go to get advice on interpersonal dilemmas — writing that she recently received a text from her older brother that simply read, “Do you have good credit?”
“When I replied to him and answered that I do, he proceeded to ask me to be a co-signer on [a] car,” she shared in her Jan. 19 post.

The Reddit user explained that the car in question was a Mercedes and also revealed that her brother — who she says has “wasted so much money on different cars” over the years — is in debt and has previously filed for bankruptcy.
“He has a child now and his current Mercedes is too small to be a ‘dad car’ so he wants to upgrade to another one,” she continued.
“As much as I want to be a good sister and try and help him out, I told him no as his financial track record is concerning,” she added.
The Redditor — who says she is a school teacher — also shared that her brother has “great job” and “makes good money.”
“I make far less than him but I am good with my finances—student loans and all,” she added.
The original poster (OP) says that she explained to her brother that she has her own bills to pay and that she is currently saving to buy property. She also shared she worries how co-signing for him could potentially negatively impact her own solid credit score.
“He still couldn’t comprehend my reasoning and sort of just scoffed it off,” she wrote, before asking her fellow Redditors if she was the “a------” for telling her sibling no “for my own financial safety.”

Reddit users were quick to show their support for the OP, with commenters reassuring her that she made the right decision.
“If the bank who has billions of dollars won’t ‘risk’ him paying them back, then why would you, who presumably has less than billions of dollars. Definitely do not co-sign,” wrote one user.
“NTA [not the a------]," wrote another, adding, “He's clearly already ruined his own credit. Under no circumstances should you allow him to ruin yours. If he's not underwater, he could sell his current Mercedes and buy a good used car large enough for his family. But then, that would be the mature, financially responsible option, and it doesn't sound like your brother is ready for adulting. Stay strong and protect yourself.”
