Woman Called 'Horrible' and 'Selfish' After Refusing to Let Stepsister Borrow Her Wedding Dress
A woman explained that she's facing backlash from her family over her decision to not let her stepsister wear her wedding dress
A bride getting married on Dec. 26 asked her stepsister if she could wear her wedding dress because she says that hers won't arrive in time.
The stepsister refused and is now facing backlash from the bride and groom, as well as her stepfather, who have labeled her "horrible" and "selfish."
Redditors think that the stepsister is in the right, and should not let the bride wear her dress. They even suspect that the bride never ordered a dress and wanted to wear hers all along.
A bride and her stepsister are butting heads over a wedding dress.
In a post on Reddit's popular "Am I the A------?" forum, a 23-year-old woman said that her 26-year-old stepsister and bride-to-be is "super angry" at her for not allowing her to wear her wedding dress. The poster got married about a year ago, and was shocked when her stepsister asked to wear her gown because hers allegedly won't arrive on time.
The poster explained that she hardly knows the groom, having met him only a few times. As for her relationship with the bride, it's rocky to say the least.
"We can't get along," she wrote. "I've tried and I'm sure she also has, but it's not about being different, it's because she has always had very similar taste as me. We used to fight about our clothes, our toys and so on."
The bride announced her relationship with her soon-to-be husband at her stepsister's wedding, which "annoyed" the poster but she "let it go" because the moment didn't take long. The two got engaged four months later.
Since then, the bride has been planning her wedding, which is scheduled for Dec. 26. The poster notes that she's been trying to help as much as she can.
With the wedding in about two weeks, the poster "thought everything was set and ready to go." But she was wrong.
"On Saturday, she calls me crying, saying that her wedding dress wouldn't arrive on time since she had some changes done," the bride's stepsister wrote. "For some context, no one knows how this dress looks because she wanted to 'keep it a surprise for everyone,' per her own words."
The woman tried to comfort the bride and listed a handful of local boutiques that likely had wedding dresses that would be ready for her to wear on her big day.
"She cries harder, telling me she didn't want any 'cheap' dress," she continued. "I tried to calm her down once more before telling her I would call my stepdad to see what we could do. Before I could finish that sentence, she says out of the blue, 'Can I wear your dress?'"
The poster wasn't expecting that question so she didn't know how to immediately respond.
The bride argued that wearing her wedding dress would be the easiest option, and would work because they're the same size. She added that she loved the dress the second she saw it.
But the poster refused.
"I don't know what possessed me to simply say 'No' and hang up the phone," she said. "I've received multiple calls from her, her fiancé and my stepdad, who I did respond to. He pleaded to me to let her 'borrow' my wedding dress, 'just like when we were kids.'"
The poster explained to her stepfather that she "wouldn't feel comfortable" letting anyone else wear her "special" wedding dress.
"He got super angry with me and hung up," she wrote. "My messages have been exploding with my stepsister, her soon-to-be husband and my stepdad telling me how horrible I am for being so selfish."

She continued: "I know how my stepsister is. I know how dramatic and over the top she can be when she doesn't get her way. But there's a part of me that feels awful for not letting her wear it since it's just a dress and it would make her so happy. But there's that other part of me that remembers how my husband, my mom and I struggled to save for it because it was my dream dress, and I don't want to share something so personal with her."
The poster is now considering letting her stepsister wear her wedding dress "just so things don't escalate." But Reddit users have advised her in the comments section to do the opposite, with some even suspecting that there was no other dress and that the bride schemed to wear her stepsister's dress all along.
"I’m calling shenanigans on your stepsister’s part," the top comment reads. "She probably had her eye on your dress since day one, probably commissioned a similar dress (if she even did) hence the surprise, and planned to use your dress as a backup if hers didn’t show up in time."
Another person added: "Right?! 'Oh no, how inconvenient that the dress no one has seen won't arrive in time... but my sister's dress is PERFECT!'"
