The Great British Bake Off is back tonight to brighten up your Tuesday evenings for the next ten weeks. Expect more chaos inside the GBBO tent as the brand new batch of bakers rustle up more delights and compete for the top prize. But what exactly is the top prize?
Whoever creates the winning showstopper doesn’t get a cash prize, but receives flowers and a cake stand. Yep, that’s it. Not a penny in sight. You can see for yourselves when the GBBO 2020 final takes place on October 29th at 8pm on Channel 4.
But let’s not forget all the perks of simply competing on The Great British Bake Off, as almost every winner has since gone on to amass a huge social media following and carve out a career as a professional baker. In fact, it’s rare that a winner goes back to their old job after competing on the Channel 4 show.
For example, Great British Bake Off 2019 winner David Atherton has more than 126k Instagram followers and has already released a children's cookbook. Meanwhile, Nadiya Hussain has hosted a number of her own shows, including The Chronicles of Nadiya, Nadiya's British Food Adventure and Nadiya's Family Favourites. She also co-presented The Big Family Cooking Showdown and has become a regular contributor on The One Show. As well as writing multiple books, she was named as one of the 500 most influential people in the UK in 2017.
After winning season 1, Edd Kimber left his job as debt collector and pursued a full-time cooking career and is still a huge success in the baking world 10 years later. As well as being the resident baker on The Alan Titchmarsh Show at one point, he's published four books: Say It With Cake, The Boy Who Bakes, Patisserie Made Simple and the most recent book, One Tin Bakes.
