Prince William has made a surprise video call to a five-year-old boy with cystic fibrosis who has been shielding for three months.

William, 37, called Kaydyn and his mum Leanne who have had to stay inside since the beginning of lockdown as the government urged those with serious conditions to avoid public places.

The film is to be shown on The One Show on the BBC on Tuesday about extremely vulnerable people who have had to stay home as much as possible, and the challenges they are facing.

In a clip seen by the Press Association, Leanne covers her mouth in shock as the Duke of Cambridge appears on her screen.

Some 2.2 million people who were shielding were told they could leave their homes from the beginning of June.

Leanne and Kaydyn, from Corby, Northamptonshire, have been on two country walks so far.

The BBC said: “Initially Kaydyn was frustrated about being forced to stay inside – now he is very nervous about leaving the house.”

Also in the film is Shelby Lynch, a 21-year-old from Leeds, who has spinal muscular atrophy type 2 and is on a ventilator 24 hours a day.

She remains extremely vulnerable to COVID-19 because of her condition.

Shelby will tell of how she has found it hard at home with her father, stepmother and brother, particularly being apart from her boyfriend.

It follows the moment she is able to leave home and have a socially distanced meet-up with her boyfriend after weeks apart.

She said: “He had been feeling a little down so it was nice to see his face light up.”

Prince William’s call will be broadcast on Tuesday evening on BBC One from 7pm.
