The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are hosting a special Christmas carol service in London next week.

Prince William and Kate want to bring people together for the service at Westminster Abbey, supported by The Royal Foundation, which will be broadcast in December.

“This Christmas we are celebrating the incredible work of individuals and organisations across the nation who go above and beyond to support their communities,” the Cambridges shared on their Instagram page, posting a photograph of the official royal invitation to the service.

The festive occasion will reflect on the past 18 months, with a particular focus on the way people have pulled together during the challenges faced during the pandemic. Invites will go out to individuals and organisations across the nation who go above and beyond to support their communities.

"The service, which will be broadcast in December, will look back on the last 18 months, to think not only of the unprecedented challenges that we have all faced as we continue to navigate the Covid-19 pandemic, but also to remember the positives: people and organisations pulling together in their communities, the small acts of kindness across different demographics and generations, and the unsung heroes who stepped up to help others," they wrote.

This will be the first Christmas for the royal family without Prince Philip, who died back in April.

At the time, Prince William shared an emotional tribute for his late grandfather:"I feel lucky to have not just had his example to guide me, but his enduring presence well into my own adult life – both through good times and the hardest days. I will always be grateful that my wife had so many years to get to know my grandfather and for the kindness he showed her. I will never take for granted the special memories my children will always have of their great-grandpa coming to collect them in his carriage and seeing for themselves his infectious sense of adventure as well as his mischievous sense of humour.

"My grandfather was an extraordinary man and part of an extraordinary generation. Catherine and I will continue to do what he would have wanted and will support The Queen in the years ahead. I will miss my Grandpa, but I know he would want us to get on with the job."

The Cambridges' Christmas carol service will take place at Westminster Abbey in London on 8 December at 5pm.
