Have you always wanted to visit a place that offers a vibrant city life as well as beautiful nature scenery? Well look no further, because Zürich, Switzerland offers just that.

With an urban population of 380,500, Zürich may not be nearly as big as other European cosmopolitan cities like Paris, London and Milan. However, that doesn’t mean that this Swiss city has less to offer.

From enjoying picturesque views to going on a shopping spree, check out this guide that will convince you why Zürich should be your next summer destination.

The cultural capital:

Zürich is not only the biggest city in Switzerland, but also the country’s cultural capital with over 50 museums to choose from. To check out a prestigious collection of fine art, head over to the Kunsthaus.

To learn a bit about 100 years of Swiss culture, the Swiss National Museum is home to exciting exhibitions. Romanesque-style churches and cathedrals located in the heart of the Old Town are impressive landmarks to explore. If you climb up the stairs of the tower at the Grossmüenster Cathedral, you will be blessed with a stunning view of the entire city.

The lake:

Zürich’s elongated lake is the natural centrepiece of the city surrounded by mighty mountains and hills. During the summer months, the lake is extremely active and buzzing with various water activities.

For the adventurous and athletic types, wakeboarding, waterskiing and sailing are popular amongst locals and tourists alike. Or if you prefer a more laid back activity, opt for some lakeside swimming.

Hopping on a commercial cruise boat is a great public transport method whilst seeing the sights. For more private exploring, renting a pedal boat or motor boat is also an option.

The food scene:

Located at the heart of Europe, Switzerland is caught in the crossfire of various culinary influences from its neighbouring countries. Italian-style pizza places are just as common as in Italy.

For light bites, pop-up sausage stands are located on various street corners that typically serve traditional German-style bratwurst. If you are a die hard cheese fan, you’ve certainly come to the right place. Head over to Restaurant Swiss Chuchi for some classic Swiss fondue and raclette.

Zürich’s food scene isn’t just limited to Western cuisines. Foodies will get to explore over 100 food stands and trucks selling culinary delicacies from all over the world at street food festivals that take place throughout the year.

The party scene:

Zürich’s vibrant nightlife offers a diverse range of nightclubs to suit anyone’s personal taste. For those who wish to dress to impress and pop bottles of fancy liquor, Jade, Vior and Aura are your go-to places.

Hipsters flock to the Zürich West district and rave to some EDM at clubs such as Hive and Zukunft. During the summer, club-goers dance the night away under the stars at popular outdoor parties.

If you are keen on listening to some hot lakeside tunes, SANAPA is the place to be on a sunny Saturday afternoon. However, Zürich’s biggest party of the year takes place in the month of August. Over a million electronic music fans gather and dress up in eccentric attire at the annual Street Parade. Hardcore ravers dance on portable party trucks known as Love Mobiles that parade through the city.

The shopping:

Shopaholics are guaranteed to shop til they drop in this city. The Bahnhofstrasse is the main shopping district, stretching from the main train station towards the lake. Commercial highstreet brands and department stores dominate the first half of the shopping street, while luxury boutiques occupy the second half.

If you are a shopper that perhaps has a rather urban or unique taste, the Old Town offers a range of cool and quirky shops.

For a more unusual shopping experience, head off to the industrial area known as Kreis 5. There you will find old warehouse containers that have been converted to shops.
