This is why Kate Middleton carries a clutch

If you’re at an event and the thought of shaking hands with a stranger isn’t your cup of tea, then you might want to invest in a good clutch bag. As reported in Good Housekeeping, when the Duchess of Cambridge is at an event, she holds her clutch in front of her, in both hands, “when shaking hands might be awkward.”
“It is protocol that you do not extend your hand to any member of the royal family (blood royal or those who have married into the family) unless their hand extends first,” further explained The Daily Mail’s royal expert William Hanson. Hence why the royal wants something she can hold with both hands.
The style then allows her to easily switch to one hand when necessary.
