This year's Met Gala gave way to a host of A-list celebrities who interpreted the 'Gilded Glamour and White Tie' dress code, under the 'In America: An Anthology of Fashion' theme, in a myriad of ways.

Yet, as many stars like Blake Lively, Billie Eilish and Simone Ashley took to the stairs at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, some celebrities were notably and surprisingly absent, including Miley Cyrus, Ariana Grande, Rihanna, Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas and 'Bennifer'.

Here's a list of the celebrities who didn't attend the Met Gala 2022:

Miley Cyrus

Cyrus last attended the Met Gala in 2019, when she was still with her ex-husband Liam Hemsworth.

This time around, the glitzy New York event took place during the end of the singer's South American Attention tour, and she was believed to have chosen to stay put after her shows.

Cyrus has stayed silent on social media in recent days and chosen not to reveal her current whereabouts nor any information relating to her absence at the event.

While hush-hush about the Met Gala, Cyrus opened up just days ago about her experience of playing live shows again.

'It's one of those "You just had to be there" experiences. The fans, the chaos & the pandemonium, [sic]' she wrote on Instagram.

'So much life lived in only 2 weeks,' she added. 'I appreciate your dedication to me & my music more than I can express!'

Ariana Grande

Grande's last Met Gala appearance was way back in 2018. However, the singer and her husband Dalton Gomez opted out of this year's event.

While it's unknown whether Grande had planned to attend the event, we do know she has been preparing for her role as Glinda in the two-part film Wicked. She gave fans an update on the show via her Instagram on Tuesday, May 3, and shared a series of photos - one of which showed her rehearsing.

Anya Taylor-Joy

While The Queen's Gambit breakout star Taylor-Joy hasn't posted about where she spent her evening during the Met Gala 2022, we do know she's currently working on several film projects (such as Furiosa, Laughter in the Dark, Amsterdam and Menu).

So, it can be presumed that she may have been busy filming during the event.

Adele

News of Adele's absence at the Met Gala follows on from us learning that she's in the process of finalising a Las Vegas residency deal.

She previously spoke on The Graham Norton Show about her upcoming residency, saying: 'It is absolutely 100 percent happening this year. It has to happen this year because I've got plans for next year.

'Imagine if I have to cancel because I am having a baby!'

Harry Styles and Olivia Wilde

Styles and Wilde may not have directly addressed their absence at the Met Gala, but Wilde did debut the trailer for her upcoming movie, which she directed, Don't Worry Darling, starring the ex-One Direction band member on the night of the Met Gala.

Styles previously attended the Met Gala in 2019, while Wilde was photographed at the event back in 2016. The pair, who tend to keep their romance private, are yet to make a red carpet appearance together.

Priyanka Chopra And Nick Jonas

Chopra and Jonas welcomed their first baby together via surrogate earlier this year, so it's unsurprising that they weren't at the fashion calendar event.

Sophie Turner and Joe Jonas, however, did attend.

Chopra and Jonas first attended the annual event together as friends in 2017 and the rest, they say, is history.

Megan Fox And Machine Gun Kelly

Fox and Kelly kept their whereabouts on the night private, and it's unknown whether they were invited to the event or not.

While Kelly has never attended the Met Gala, Fox went last September.

Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck

The newly engaged couple have been house-searching in California and are understood to have chosen to stay on the West Coast.

They did, however, attend the last gala held in September 2021, despite being photographed separately on the red carpet.

Beyoncé

Beyoncé generally keeps a low profile, but the Daily Mail published photos of her and Jay-Z arriving in Miami yesterday, after they spent time on a private island off the coast of Florida.

Her last Instagram post included pictures amid the Oscars, which saw her in a sheer embellished after-party dress.

Taylor Swift And Joe Alwyn

Swift and Alwyn don't typically attend the Met Gala, though the event is where Swift has hinted she met Alwyn, as per her reputation song 'Dress'.

Her song's lyrics read: 'Flashback when you met me / Your buzzcut and my hair bleached / Even in my worst times, you could see the best of me.'

Alwyn recently talked to us about privacy and his relationship, noting: 'It's not really [because I] want to be guarded and private, it's more a response to something else.'

'We live in a culture that is so increasingly intrusive… The more you give—and frankly, even if you don't give it—something will be taken.'

Meghan Markle And Prince Harry

Markle and Prince Harry were photographed last Friday, at which point the father-of-two was seen playing polo with Nacho Figueras at the Santa Barbara Polo and Racquet Club.

It is believed that they are keeping a low profile at their Montecito, California home with their two children Archie, two and Lilibet, 10 months, following the Invictus Games in The Hague and their secret meeting with The Queen in Windsor last month.

Rihanna And A$AP Rocky

Rihanna is pregnant with her and Rocky's first baby together, so her absence from the event was understandable. The singer has been spotted mastering maternity style as of late, so we can only imagine what she would have worn.

The 34-year-old previously told Refinery29: 'Right now I’m really into pushing the idea of sexy.'

She continued: 'When women get pregnant, society tends to make it feel like you hide, hide your sexy, and that you’re not sexy right now [but] you’ll get back there and I don’t believe in that shit. So I’m trying stuff that I might not have even had the confidence to try before I was pregnant. The strappiest, the thinnest, and the more cut-outs the better for me.'

Selena Gomez

Gomez, who's been busy shooting Selena + Chef on the West Coast, responded to a fan's statement about the Met. 'You should be at the met!!! we need your beauty there, [sic]' the fan wrote.

The 30-year-old, who last attended in 2018, quipped back: 'When I go back, you'll know babe.'

Lady Gaga

Gaga teased that amid the Met Gala, she spent the day by the pool in Las Vegas (where she's filming her Jazz and Piano residency show) in a blue bikini.

She captioned her photo 'Somebody’s [sic].'

Zendaya

Zendaya told Extra prior to the event that she would be skipping it due to work commitments.

She said: 'I'm gonna disappoint my fans here, but I will be working. Your girl's gotta work and make some movies. So I wish everyone the best. I will be playing tennis. But yeah, I’ll be back eventually…Yeah, I’ll keep delivering in other ways [on other red carpets].'

She previously discussed her red carpet style with InStyle, saying: 'I think about red carpets as having their own characters and narratives.

'We build a little story for all the looks. It's like an extension of my acting career in a weird way—you just pop this wig on or whatever it is. Clothes sometimes are very emotional, so I get to embody these different facets—maybe they're of myself, or maybe they're alter egos. But I get to meet these different women through clothes.'
