If your grand plan to shift a few pounds was to team up with your male partner and to follow a low calorie food plan together, then you might want to think again. Because according to a new scientific study, in these circumstances men are more likely to lose weight at a faster pace - which could potentially cause demotivation for you.

The research, carried out by professors from various universities around the world including the University of Copenhagen and the University of Auckland, was published earlier this month in the journal Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism. Researchers took just over 2,000 participants - a mix of overweight men and women with pre-diabetes - and instructed them to follow the Cambridge Weight Plan.

The Cambridge Weight Plan involved consuming just 810 calories daily, mostly consisting of juices and shakes. As well as that, participants ate 375 grams of low-calorie vegetables each day, such as tomatoes, cucumbers and lettuce.

After eight weeks on the plan, the results revealed that the men on the diet had lost - on average - more weight than the women. Men lost an average of 26 pounds (11.8 kilograms), whereas women lost around 22 pounds (10.2 kg).

Although the scientists wouldn't be able to speak for all methods of weight loss available, what they did conclude was that on this particular low-calorie diet plan, men shed weight quicker than the women. Which is mildly frustrating for us.

And that wasn't the only benefit for men that outweighed the women's results. The male participants in the trial also reduced their body fat by greater amounts than their female counterparts, as well as lowering their blood pressure and body mass index (BMI) at a quicker rate.

So all in all, it seems like male bodies may respond quicker to this kind of diet overhaul than women's. But don't be disheartened; as we know, the most effective way to increase your health and fitness is to implement sustainable lifestyle changes - not just low calorie diets that you'll soon grow tired of. Do that, and you'll be a winner in the long run.
