Today is an incredibly poignant day for the Royal Family, as it marks the date that Princess Diana would have turned 60 years old. In honour of her memory, and to continue keeping her work and spirited ethos alive, Prince William and Prince Harry have come together to unveil a statue of their mother, which has been in the works for a number of years.

Originally the event was set to be on a grand scale, with not only close family members invited, but members of the public too and those who had met with and worked alongside Diana in the past. However, due to some COVID-19 restrictions still being in place, the guest list has been drastically trimmed back – and The Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton, wasn't in attendance either.

An alleged source close to the family told Page Six: "Catherine’s absence speaks volumes... I think keeping the numbers down is a perfect 'excuse' for Catherine to stay away. William is fed up with the drama and Catherine doesn’t need to be dragged into this."

The same source also added that Kate, along with her and William's three children - Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis - would still come to visit the statue, but at a later date and without it being a public affair.

"They are planning a private family visit with their children, and that private moment is far more important than the public rhetoric," the anonymous person commented.

Reports on William and Harry's interactions at Prince Philip's funeral dominated much of the event's media coverage earlier this year. The sad day saw the pair reunite publicly for the first time since Harry and Meghan stepped down from their senior working positions within the Royal Family.

It's believed that Prince William, the future king, was keen to avoid that happening again and for the focus to be very much on his mother's legacy moving forward. "William is determined that the Sussex drama does not overshadow this important moment of remembrance to his much-missed mother and is keeping that as his focus," said the source.

While it's a real shame that the pandemic restrictions have forced the unveiling plans to change shape, it sounds like the Cambridges' follow-up visit will be a very special moment for them all just the same.
