This is why Kate Middleton doesn't sign autographs
We've seen the Duchess of Cambridge try everything from pretzel-making to rowing on her recent royal visits, but there's one thing you won't catch the Duchess doing. Unfortunately for any Kate Middleton fans, she and other members of the royal family are not allowed to sign autographs, and there's a very specific reason why.
As The Express points out, this strict protocol is in place because there's a risk of royal signatures being copied or forged. So you won't see the Duke of Cambridge signing autographs for well-wishers either, although that hasn't stopped some members of the family from breaking this rule in the past.
During a visit to meet flood victims in Cornwall, England, in 2010, Prince Charles scribbled 'Charles 2010' on a piece of paper for a resident who requested an autograph, The Telegraph noted at the time. He reportedly apologised for the 'shaky writing' because he 'never writes standing up"', but the recipient was said to be delighted nonetheless.
And Charles isn't the only one to overlook the guideline. Also in 2010, Prince Harry signed his name along with 'get well soon' on the cast of an injured girl.
These are said to be rare occurrences, but there are some occasions when the royals are invited to sign their names. They may sign visitors books' or official documents, as Kate recently did last year after touring the National Portrait Gallery in Canberra, Australia, during her royal visit back in 2014.
The autograph ban is just another thing to add to the list of stipulations that comes with being a royal.
