In the last few days, you may have seen #EverythingIsCake trending on Twitter and cropping up all over Instagram and TikTok alongside pictures and videos of seemingly normal objects that in fact turn out to be cake when cut into.
We've seen everything from Crocs and toilet roll to a bag of Doritos (chilli heatwave to be exact), turn out to be cakes disguised as these very realistic items. But, it was probably the curry that tipped me over the edge into full existential meltdown.
So, it's simultaneously horrifying and amazing, but where did it all come from? Illusion cakes have always been a thing, but this recent phase of super realistic illusion cakes was thought to have started with cake and sugar artist, Tuba Geçkil the mastermind behind a Turkish company named Red Rose Cake & Tuba Geçkil. She's responsible for some of the most unbelievable illusion cakes that have started doing the rounds on social media, including that Croc, apples, toilet roll and some raw chicken drumsticks.
She also does full cake busts of celebrities which are quite honestly astounding.
So, now that we'll be going out into the world unsure as to whether everything around us is or is not a cake, like some sort of bakery-based solipsism, at least we can feel reassured that we're all as unnerved as each other...

It's nice to know we're all in this together isn't it? Unless... we're all cake.
