Why everyone wants 'watch me as I walk away' hair

The autumn / winter 2018 runway has been filled with hair that has been subtly tousled to give it the natural-looking bounce and movement it needs to catch everyone's attention as you make your entrance (or exit), while still looking like you've barely touched your tresses at all.

At Michael Kors the look was achieved with the help of a centre-parting, which kept the models' hair away from their faces, while subtly adding bounce around their hairlines.

The trick is not to encourage too much height around your crown though - as that can look overstyled. Instead, keep your roots flat, either by tucking strands behind your ears - à la Oscar de la Renta - or by only adding a little bit of texturising spray, through the ends, not lengths, as demonstrated at Calvin Klein.

Booking in for a glossy blow-dry is also worthwhile, as a good one will add body without necessarily going overboard on texture. Take the hair at Ralph Lauren as your inspiration, as lead hairstylist Guido Palau's decision to use heat protector - try Redken's Satinwear 04, £13.10 - ensured a shiny finish, without compromising on natural swish.

If your hair often falls flat, you can make the most of loose waves, such as those styled for Tory Burch, but only bend your tresses around a curling iron, to keep your curls loose and to avoid perfectly placed ringlets.

At the end of the day though, bouncy hair often equates to healthy hair so avoid overstyling if you can and focus on enhancing your natural texture. Coarse and afro-hair types should look to add moisture, as recommended by Charlotte Mensah, while a little bit of texturising hairspray applied with your head upside-down will give just the right amount of lift to straighter locks.

The mantra to keep in mind? Make a statement without too much of a statement - because the power of the look comes from an air of "take me as I am" individualism. And that is all the attitude you should need.
