Ellie Goulding has shared the understandable reason why she decided to keep her lockdown pregnancy under wraps.

The 34-year-old musician is due to give birth to her first child with husband Caspar Jopling next month. She shared the news on her own terms in a Vogue photo shoot in her third trimester recently.

Goulding told The Sunday Telegraph that she 'needed time to get my head around [pregnancy]', before telling the world she was going to become a mum for the first time, adding 'it still feels strange to say those words out loud'.

She said she was 'shocked' when she found out she was pregnant, while on a road trip in Italy to celebrate her first wedding anniversary.

'It sounds perfectly planned but it just wasn't on my agenda,' she explained. Especially as 2020 was incredibly busy, with releasing her fourth album Brightest Blue (which went straight to number one) and writing a health and fitness book, out later this year.

Like many women, Goulding 'needed that space to process what was happening'. She added: 'I’ve always defined myself as a touring musician. That’s who I am and what I do. Being a mother wasn’t in my mind frame, I’ve never felt any woman had to be defined by motherhood.'

Speaking to friends who were pregnant or had recently given birth helped. They included Katy Perry and Princess Eugenie, who has 'been a great friend throughout this'.

'We’ve talked a lot about pregnancy and she’s been inspirational because she just takes everything in her stride. Katy [Perry] has been great too, and my manager has gone through her pregnancy with me, along with both our families and friends from home who have had babies. It just brings everyone closer together.'
