Breaking up is hard to do. Especially if you’ve been dumped for no apparent reason. But while you might automatically assume your ex has had their head turned by someone else, apparently its far more likely your relationship came to an end for political reasons.

A new survey by What’s Your Price of 6,842 dating app members has been released which has studied the top reasons couples broke up in 2016. And the results are pretty surprising. Because the most common reason that women dumped their partners last year was because of political differences. So it seems that Brexit and the US election has done more than just divided nations, turns out it’s split relationships too.

When it comes to the top reason men finished with their significant others, things take a turn for the superficial, as the most common reason they ended things with their partner was the issue of weight gain. *sighs*

The survey also revealed that bad sex was a top reason for women to call it quits, with almost a quarter of women (24%) admitting that a poor performance in the sack was enough for them to end things.

For men, while bad sex also featured in the top 5 reasons to split it didn’t feature as high as attachment issues, with a fifth of men claiming that their other half getting too attached had made them want to run for the hills.

Unsurprisingly jealousy played a part in both men’s and women’s reasons for parting ways. But though infidelity was a reason sited by 8% of men, it didn’t feature as a female reason to break up.

“See a trend here? Jealousy, infidelity, it all comes back to lack of trust,” the app says.

“Relationships are built on this. The second someone starts to question the integrity and the motives of the other, it is game over. If they have no reason to think you are unfaithful then you shouldn’t let them treat you like you are. Don’t leave yourself in a relationship where you are getting a “We need to talk” text once a week.”
