Whether or not you're a fan of the almighty post-credits scene, The Eternals—which is, at long last, officially in cinemas—makes it just about necessary that you stick around in your seat until the very, very end.

In the second post-credits scene, we glimpse Kit Harington's Dane Whitman, seemingly a mere mortal, eyeing up a fancy sword. He's hyping himself up to do something with it, muttering, “You can do this, you can do this." Eventually, he works up the nerve to touch it. Whitman says, “I’m sorry, I have to try,” but he's stopped by a voice from off-screen. “Sure you’re ready for that, Mr. Whitman?” Whitman stops. Then? Cut to black. Thankfully, if you were just as confused as us—and guessing the identity of the mystery voice—the director of The Eternals, Chloé Zhao, let Fandom in on the secret.

That was the voice of one of my favorite superheroes, Mr. Blade himself. Blade, Blade, Blade, yeah! ... You just have to wait for [Blade's solo-film]. I don’t know what they’re doing with the movie, but Mahershala [Ali] is a treasure. It’s going to be epic.

There you go: Decades after Wesley Snipes changed the comic-book movie game with Blade, we finally saw the introduction of the new version of the vampire hunter, played by the endlessly talented Mahershala Ali. So what's Blade doing with Whitman? Marvel seems to be setting up a storyline that would see Whitman take up the mantle of Black Knight, using that fancy sword (legal name: The Ebony Blade) for good and/or evil, depending on the character's direction. In the comics, Blade and Whitman cross paths, too, once serving on the same superhero team. With this scene, it's likely that Harington will appear in Blade, which should hit theaters in 2022. How does the man formerly known as Jon Snow feel about it all?

“It’s really cool," Harington told Fandom. [Chloé] texted me about that a couple of weeks ago and it sort of blew my mind. I didn’t know that that would be the case, so it’s pretty exciting for me.”
