The Pembrokeshire Murders delves into the true story of serial killer John Cooper and how he was eventually captured but where was the crime drama filmed?

It’s been three years since The Pembrokeshire Murders first left its mark with ITV viewers, telling the true tale of how the Dyfed Powys Police caught serial killer John Cooper decades after committing four brutal murders.

In the series, when Detective Superintendent Steve Wilkins (played by Luke Evans) is promoted in 2006, he re-opens the cold murder cases of siblings Richard and Helen Thomas in 1985, as well as Peter and Gwenda Dixon in 1989.

It is thanks to advances in forensic technology that the police find a DNA match with John Cooper (played by Keith Allen in the series), who was about to be released from prison for a number of burglaries.

After getting this initial crucial evidence, it’s up to Wilkins and the rest of the force to try and hold Cooper accountable for his unspeakable crimes.

And as the show is coming out on Netflix on Sunday, December 1, here’s everything there is to know about where the three-part series was filmed.

The Pembrokeshire Murders filming locations

The ITV and Netflix drama is set in Pembrokeshire and across southwest Wales in both the 1980s and 2000s.

Filming took place for the three-part series in January 2020 and was wrapped up just a couple of days before the start of Wales’ first coronavirus lockdown in March 2020.

As the drama’s title suggests, the show was filmed on location in Pembrokeshire with interior shots largely filmed in the studio in Cardiff.

Some of the specific locations used for filming included Goodwick, Freshwater East, Fishguard, along Pembrokeshire’s coastal path, Port Talbot and Little Haven.

These places were used in particular for the true crime drama as they were towns and spots that Cooper often used to visit.

The house used as John Cooper's home was not the real Cooper household but another similar property located in the village of Trefin, north Pembrokeshire.

Cooper’s prison scenes were shot in Gloucester Prison, while the court room scenes were shot at Cardiff Crown Court when in reality, the case was heard in Swansea.

Reflecting on filming the drama set in Wales, Welsh actor Luke Evans: said: “It’s actually my first time working on a project in Wales so for me, it’s very poignant, and also that it is a Welsh story.

“I got to visit some incredibly beautiful parts of Wales as well which was special. It was a joy to come to set and listen to all these beautiful Welsh accents every day. I’ve missed it very much.”

The Pembrokeshire Murders is available to watch on Netflix.
