Where to eat, drink, stay and explore in Tokyo ahead of the summer Olympics

The Olympics are finally happening this summer and while the crowds are still lacking for now, we can still dream of neon-lit days in Tokyo. The modern metropolis may be one of the world’s most forward-looking capitals, but its history is always proudly on show, too. Shrines, festivals and time-honoured traditions are still an important part of life here – only they come with a backdrop of supersize buildings, sky-high towers and fluoro signage.

It may be impossible to imitate Japanese street style, but some inspiration never harmed anyone – hanging out with Harajuku’s cool kids is the place to start. Find out what’s next in tech in Akihabara, possibly the most ahead-of-the-curve electronics district on Earth; go shopping in Shibuya or Ginza; eat sushi for breakfast at Tsukiji Outer Market or Toyosu; join the millions of daily commuters passing through the world’s busiest train station, Shinjuku; or run for the hills, literally, with a hike up Mount Fuji, on the edge of the city and prettily visible from regular vantage points throughout.

Seeing the world’s most celebrated explosion of cherry blossom might be on most bucket lists – and sakura-enhanced spring is indeed a lovely time to visit the city – but Tokyo is equally attractive year-round, though high summer gets a little hot and humid for some.
