Easter tree searches are up by 977% - why are they so popular?

While Christmas trees are a staple in most households come December, Easter trees have seen a stark rise in popularity for 2021.
With our second Easter in lockdown imminent, Sainsbury’s says searches for Easter trees on its website have surged by 977% compared to the same time last year.

The supermarket giant adds that searches for Easter decorations are up by 948% as well, which suggests we’re looking to go all-out this weekend.
It’s not just Easter trees that have seen a rise in interest either, M&S reports that there has been an 86% uplift in sales of its Easter eggs for 2021 and many supermarkets have already sold out of certain eggs online as we gear up for the chocolate-centric holiday.

What are Easter trees?
With Scandi-style bare branches, it’s no surprise that Easter trees are popular in Sweden. Called ‘Påskris’, our Nordic neighbours traditionally celebrate the holiday by stringing painted eggs and feathers around their trees for a festive look.

It’s a well-trodden tradition in Germany too. Called “Ostereierbaum”, branches of trees have been decorated with eggs every Easter for centuries.
The trend is relatively new in the the UK, but it’s catching on quickly and is taking off on social media too, where the hashtag #Eastertree on Instagram has over 50,000 images.
Perhaps the rising popularity of the trees in the UK could be the simple fact that we want to celebrate the small things while we remain in lockdown - and Easter trees are an easy and fun way to brighten up any home.
Compared to Christmas trees, Easter trees tend to be smaller, more twig than tree, and covered with vibrant decorations rather than baubles.
Where can I buy an Easter tree?
Easter trees are easy to DIY, simply grab a couple of branches or twigs and centre them in a pot or vase. Then decorate it with whatever decor you like - hand-painted eggs is a fun idea or string brightly-coloured chocolates from the branches.
