A weekend in Geneva: What to see, do and eat in Switzerland's buzzing city

A short hour-and-a-bit flight from London and a free, speedy 7-minute train journey from the airport to the centre, Geneva is one of the easiest European cities to get to – making it the perfect weekend getaway.

The city’s compact, too, so you can easily see all of the sights within a 36- or 48-hour period. There are buses and trams aplenty, otherwise you can get in some steps by walking to one side of the city to the other within 30-40 minutes.

The food’s good, the weather’s pretty similar to here (which makes packing a doddle) and, as cities go, Geneva’s really quite safe and violence free. Oh, and did we mention it’s incredibly picturesque? Built around a huge lake (so clean you can swim in it) and surrounded by the Alps and Mont Blanc, it’s also the European city with the most green spaces – second to only London.

Are you starting to see why so many people opt to live in the Swiss destination?

The downside is it’s expensive. Arm yourself with plenty of Swiss Francs and expect to shell out around 4chf for a soft drink and 7chf+ for a wine or beer.

A meal main meal will cost you anything from 20-35chf and if you plan to cook your own food, it’s worth knowing that all shops and supermarkets are shut on Sundays – so you’ll want to stock up in advance.

Without further ado, here’s how we recommend you spend your time in the city.
