Couples are eagerly resuming wedding planning following yesterday’s coronavirus plan announcement.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson shared the government's roadmap, announcing a hopeful easing of all restrictions for events - including weddings - from 21 June.

Wedding app Bridebook crashed last night after the announcement, reporting a sudden rise in traffic by 720 per cent, after 23,112 couples logged in to resume their wedding planning.

Hamish Shephard, founder of the app, explained: “It was the busiest night in wedding planning history and the app crashed within an hour of Boris’ announcement.”

“We saw a high number of couples attempting to download Bridebook to book their venue in the space of a few hours,” he continued, confirming that the app is now back up and running.

“It’s not surprising given the clarity we now have for the summer peak wedding season and beyond, with next year being set to see 1 million people get married.”

Bridebook reports that an estimated 735 couples will tie the knot on 21 June, which is the earliest day that the UK government expects all social-distancing restrictions to be lifted.

Under the current national lockdown restrictions, weddings and civil partnerships can only occur in exceptional circumstances with up to six people present. According to the roadmap rollout, weddings with up to 15 people will be permitted from 12 April, while larger ceremonies and receptions of 30 guests will be allowed from 17 May. However, the biggest shift is due to take place from 21 June, when all limitations on weddings are set to be lifted.
