Zendaya has teamed up with Euphoria creator Sam Levinson for romantic drama Malcolm & Marie co-starring John David Washington.
The black and white film follows Zendaya and Washington as a creative young couple living together somewhere near Hollywood. He stars as an ambitious filmmaker, while she plays an aspiring actress looking for her big break.
As they return home following a celebratory movie premiere, he awaits what's sure to be imminent critical and financial success. The evening suddenly takes a turn as revelations about their relationships begin to surface, testing the strength of their love.
Written and directed by 36-year-old Levinson, the movie is described by Netflix as "an ode to the great Hollywood romances as well as a heartfelt expression of faith in the medium's future", and will launch on the streaming platform on February 5th, ahead of Valentine's Day.
Zendaya, 24, won a best actress Emmy for her role in Levinson's Euphoria at the Emmys last year, making history as the youngest woman - and the second Black woman after Viola Davis - to win best actress in a drama series in 2020.
Washington - son of the legendary Denzel Washington - has played the lead in Christopher Nolan's recent blockbuster Tenet, and Spike Lee's Oscar-winning BlacKkKlansman.
Malcolm & Marie is already being heralded as an Oscar contender ahead of the 93rd Academy Awards this year. Oscar hopefuls usually launch their movies by New Year's Day, but in light of the pandemic, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has extended the submission deadline to February 28, The Hollywood Reporter states.
The production was conceived, written, filmed - with the oversight of health experts - and edited during the pandemic. It was reportedly sold to Netflix for $30 million (£22 million).
The Academy Awards will take place on Sunday, 25 April 2021.
Malcolm & Marie launches on Netflix on February 5th.
