Britney Spears may not have released new music in five years, but it sounds like she’s preparing her vocals for a major comeback.

During her illustrious career the 40-year-old has released nine studio albums and 48 singles. Her hit debut 1999 album …Baby One More Time is one of the best-selling albums of all time, she’s won the MTV Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award and is the youngest artist to have even been given a star on the Hollywood walk of fame.

Over the last 13 years, however, Spears' career has experienced its ups and downs amid a conservatorship battle with her father Jamie Spears, which finally came to an end in November, days before her fiancé Sam Asghari proposed.

Since her father’s role in her conservatorship ended, Spears has been active on social media and shared numerous videos of herself enjoying new-found freedoms, from buying candles to getting married. It's safe to say that Spears is entering a new phase of her life, and we couldn't be more thrilled for the star.

Amid rumours Spears is focussing on making new music, here’s everything you need to know about the singer’s future career:

Is Britney Spears releasing new music?

Yes, it would appear so.

On December 22 the singer shared footage on Instagram of herself wearing a cropped purple top. In the clip Spears is heard singing, which marks a rare occasion for her followers who have only seen her perform dance routines on her social media accounts in recent years. The last time she performed live was during her Pieces of Me Las Vegas residency in 2017.

'I want you to know just what I...' she sings in the clip.

In the post’s caption, which has since been deleted, Spears wrote about her successful signing career, noting that she has sold nearly 100 million records worldwide.

The star wrote that while she ‘wasn’t auditioning for anything’ by sharing the video, she wanted to post the clip to remind herself and ‘the world of’ who she is.

‘Pssss new song in the works … I’m gonna let you know what I mean!!!!!, [sic]’ she concluded the caption, hinting that she might be back in the recording studio making new music.

‘I fn love this soo much, [sic]’ Spears’ partner Asghari commented on the post. One follower added: ‘A new song omg [sic].’ Another wrote: ‘NEW SONG INCOMING [sic].’

In June 2021 the singer said that she wasn’t sure whether she’d perform again.

‘Am I ready to take the stage again? Am I going to take the stage again? Will I ever take the stage again? I have no idea,’ Spears told fans in an Instagram video.

When did Britney Spears last release music?

Spears’ ninth studio album, Glory, came out in 2016, which Rolling Stone dubbed ‘another fantastic comeback’ from the singer.

In May 2020 she released an alternative cover for her 2016 album after it featured on the iTunes album rankings again.

During Spears' conservatorship she continued working and performed at Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas for four years, from 2013 to 2017.

Prior to the residency she appeared as a judge on American Idol in 2012, a year after releasing her album Femme Fatale.

According to the Grammys, Spears won her first Grammy award in 2004 for Best Dance Recording for ‘Toxic’, after receiving six nominations in the years before. The award came four year after she made her Grammy stage debut where she performed a medley of her hits, from ‘From The Bottom Of My Broken Heart’ to ‘… Baby One More Time’.
