Earlier this week Kim Kardashian took to the red carpet at the Met Gala 2022 in a dazzling crystal-embellished golden dress, originally worn by Marilyn Monroe in 1962.

Donning a scraped-back ballerina bun and neutral make-up, the newly-blonde star put the design in full focus for the 'Gilded Glamor and White Tie' dress code on the night, accessorising her look with Cartier jewellery and platform shoes.

Her dress was notably the exact version worn by Monroe to sing 'Happy Birthday Mister President', originally sketched by Bob Mackie and hand-sewn with 6,000 crystals by costumier Jean Louis.

The design is currently owned by Ripley’s Believe It Or Not museum and worth an estimated £3.8 million ($4.8 million).

What's more, ahead of attending the event the 41-year-old was gifted a lock of Monroe's hair.

A video posted to Ripley’s Believe It Or Not Instagram page shows Kardashian opening a present from staff, which leaves her in disbelief on realising it's a lock of the late famed actor's blonde hair.

The post is captioned: 'During @KimKardashian’s Met Gala dress fitting at Ripley’s Believe It or Not! HQ, our team surprised her with a silver box that contained an actual lock of Marilyn’s iconic platinum hair.

‘The Ripley’s team also filled her Met Gala dressing room with a trove of Marilyn Monroe and JFK memorabilia to help inspire her look. [sic]’

As for Kardashian's reaction, she enthused: 'Oh my god I’m literally going to do some crazy voodoo s**t and channel her. This is so special to me. Thank you so much, this is so cool.’

She later turned to Pete Davidson and said: 'This is sleeping with me every night… sorry babe.’

Kardashian only wore the design for 10 minutes on the night so as not to damage it, before transitioning into a replica. To much controversy, she lost 16 pounds to fit into the dress.

For last year's Met Gala, you'll most likely remember Kardashian's all-black jersey Balenciaga look that went as far as covering her face.

At the time, she was mocked for her daring outfit choice and became subjected to endless memes, which saw trolls comparing her to sister Kendall Jenner, who, by contrast, wore a glitzy sheer gown designed by Matthew Williams for Givenchy.

Defending her outfit for the occasion, where the theme was 'In America: A Lexicon of Fashion’ (a lead up to this year's: 'In America: An Anthology of Fashion'), she wrote on Instagram: 'What’s more American than a T-shirt head to toe?!’
