The show stopping trailer for new remake of classic musical West Side Story has been released.
The live-action film of the beloved show, directed by Stephen Spielberg, was due to be released late last year, but was postponed due to the pandemic. Now, West Side Story has an official release date of 10 December this year, so there's not long to wait.
The trailer was debuted at Sunday night's (25 April) Oscars ceremony by Ariana DeBose, who plays Anita in the movie.
The story is set in New York City in 1957, where love blossoms from fierce rivalries. It follows star crossed lovers Tony and Maria, as they try to bridge the rivalries between two teenage street gangs, the white Jets and the Puerto Rican Sharks.
It's Stephen Spielberg's first musical, and features a screenplay by Tony Kushner (Angels In America).
Ansel Elgort (The Goldfinch, The Fault in Our Stars) plays Tony, with newcomer Rachel Zegler playing Maria. Other cast include David Alvarez (Bernardo), Mike Faist (Riff), Josh Andrés Rivera (Chino), Ana Isabelle (Rosalía), Corey Stoll (Lieutenant Schrank), Brian d’Arcy James (Officer Krupke); and the iconic Rita Moreno, who played the role of Anita in the 10-Oscar winning 1961 film. She has also executive produced this remake.
The show has been adapted for the big screen from the original 1957 Broadway show, with book by Arthur Laurents, music by Leonard Bernstein, and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim.
