Lady Diana Spencer enters season 4 of The Crown like a whirlwind, quickly becoming a firm fixture within the royal family as her relationship with Prince Charles develops. But after the initial 'fairytale' (as episode 3 of the series calls it), cracks start to appear for the couple, just as they did in real life.

Perhaps one of the first indicators in the show that there's some underlying tension for Charles and Diana is during their engagement interview, when Prince Charles does much of the talking. Diana, meanwhile, looks on uncomfortably, like a rabbit in headlights.

But the real clincher comes when the reporter makes a comment about how "very much in love" the pair look. Princess Diana is quick to agree, saying "Yes... absolutely," as she gazes down the camera lens. Charles, on the other hand, gives a more controversial comment. "Whatever in love means," he half-chuckles.

It's pretty awkward to watch in The Crown, but when you take a look at the real life footage from Prince Charles and Princess Diana's actual engagement interview (shown top, in the video), you'll see it played out almost exactly as it does in the Netflix series.

Of all the things you might hope your husband-to-be would say in a public interview sharing your engagement news with the world, questioning what love is probably isn't the one. So it's no surprise that Diana didn't look completely at ease either in the drama series or in the real life events.

With hindsight, we know that the Wales' relationship didn't work out - partly because of the feelings Charles still had for his ex-girlfriend, Camilla Parker-Bowles. The Crown goes on to fictionalise the couple's demise, showing the Prince gifting his former love with an engraved bracelet shortly before his wedding.

In real life, Princess Diana famously spoke out about the break down of her marriage after her divorce. In an interview with Martin Bashir, she remarked: "Well, there were three of us in this marriage, so it was a bit crowded."
