Cold-Endurance Purification Ceremony in Tokyo
Shinto worshippers are having a splashing time as they pour freezing cold water over themselves in the Kanda Myojin ritual. The cold water endurance ceremony is held annually at the beginning of the year in Tokyo, Japan. Followers of Shintoism gather around the Kanda Myojin shrine and pay tribute to Daikoku – the diety of fortune – by bathing in ice water to purify their souls in hoping for good fortune as they bring in the New Year.Avalon - 3/11

Wassailing ceremony at Bridport
The Doorset Ooser wooden head mask has been spotted parading around the traditional Wassailing ceremony at Bridport Community Orchard in Bridport, England. The purpose of the festival is to drive evil spirits away with the folklore character and wake up sleeping trees by making as much noise as possible with the blowing of cow horns, banging of metal trays, firing of shot guns and shaking a branches. A sit in has taken place at St Peter’s square in Italy after an investigation into the disappearance of 15-year-old Emanuela Orlandi has reopened. The sit in was organised by Pietro Orlandi, a former employee of the Vatican and Emanuela’s brother, on January 14 in memory of his sister. Pamplona’s Running of the Bulls festival in Spain has nothing on Jallikattu’s Bull Racing Festival in Madurai. The annual event, which takes place in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu, sees breeds of bull released into the crowd of multiple people who attempt to bring the bull to a stop by grabbing it by the horns. Around 60 people were injured during the celebrations which began on January 15.Getty
