Will We Have to Wait Another 36 Years For 'Top Gun 3'?

·2-min read

We'll say this up front, we're not going to spoil Top Gun: Maverick for you. Considering the sequel to 1986's Top Gun has made (and this is a rough estimate) a bazillion dollars—not to mention stellar reviews that call it better than the original film—we highly recommend that you see it for yourself.

That said, we're here today to figure out whether or not Top Gun: Maverick is a part of larger plan Paramount may have for the high-flying franchise, or if the new entry of Tom Cruise's aviator epic is a one-off. Believe it or not, Cruise spoke to Playboy back in 1990 about whether or not he'd return for more Top Gun films. Earlier this month, Gizmodo dug up Cruise's comments, from Playboy's 1990 issue. “Some people felt that Top Gun was a right-wing film to promote the Navy," Cruise said. "And a lot of kids loved it. But I want the kids to know that that’s not the way war is—that Top Gun was just an amusement park ride, a fun film with a PG-13 rating that was not supposed to be reality. That’s why I didn’t go on and make Top Gun II and III and IV and V. That would have been irresponsible.”

Well, time clearly changes things, even for Cruise, a man who tends to speak in no uncertain terms. That said, even though Paramount and the team behind Top Gun: Maverick haven't directly addressed whether or not the franchise has its eye on completing a trilogy, you'd have to guess that we haven't seen the last of Top Gun. The new film introduces a fleet of new pilots, including Miles Teller's Rooster, Monica Barbaro's Phoenix, Glen Powell's Hangman, Jay Ellis's Payback, and Danny Ramirez's Fanboy.

You really think Paramount will let the IP sit dormant for another 36 years, after giving us a hell of a ride with the brand-new crew? We don't believe it, at least. Bring on Top Gun 3, so we can relive '80s power ballads, play beach volleyball, and fly at a speed of over 1,000 knots, again and again.
