Celebrity hairstylist Chris Appleton is considered the king of the ponytail. That’s not to say he’s a one trick pony – far from it: the pro is known for many signature styles on his clients. There’s the Cher-esque long, sleek looks he gives Kim Kardashian, Dua Lipa’s ‘90s up-dos and Jennifer Lopez’s bombshell waves, among many other memorable looks. But Appleton’s voluminous ponytails have helped reinvent the humble hairstyle as one that’s chic and polished as much as it is practical.

Needless to say, he doesn’t just scoop the hair up, secure it with a band and leave things there. As he shared this week on Instragram, there’s a little more to it. In the video, Appleton demonstrates a technique that makes the ponytail look twice as thick.

First, he separates the hair in two from ear-to-ear and secures the top section with a band into a half-up ponytail. He then splits the bottom section of hair in two and pulls both sections up and over the top ponytail, securing it with another band. As you’ll see, the effect of the two-in-one ponytail is double the thickness.

If you don’t manage Lopez-levels of volume, remember that he no doubt employs extra trickery on his A-list clientele, such as the use of clip-in extensions. Plus, of course, it helps if you have thick hair to begin with, though you can always cheat it with a body-building product like the excellent Living Proof Full Dry Volume Blast.

Regardless, it’s worth trying Appleton's technique to achieve a more professional-looking finish with your ponytail. It’s one easy way to elevate an everyday hairstyle.
