How to visit 15 European capitals for less than £300
What better way to celebrate Britain’s imminent ceding from the European Union then taking a bumper trip around the Continent’s most beautiful cities?
According to new data, it is currently possible to visit 15 European capital cities for less than £300. The research comes from travel search facility Wanderu, which uses an algorithm to design the most cost- and time-effective journeys between cities.
The route used in the sample is a loop, so it is possible to start in any of the 15 cities. Pitstops along the way include Paris, Brussels, Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Zagreb, Rome, Berlin and Warsaw.
The search facility uses data from FlixBus and OUIBUS, as well as National Express’s Euroline service.
Wanderu calculates the average cost of the journey as just under £500, but if the passenger is prepared to be flexible and take the cheapest possible ticket in each case, that figure reduces to an impressively slim sum of £298.82.
Whether you decided to do the whole route or not, some individual components of the journey are surprisingly cheap. For example, a bus from London to Brussels can cost as little as £14.41, while a journey from Prague to Vienna could be as cheap as £8.58.
Of course, what is saved in money will have to be made up in time, and coach journeys can be lengthy. The estimated total time spent on a coach for the 15-point trip would be approximately 144 hours – that’s a heck of a long time gazing out the window and contemplating the scenery.
Telegraph Travel recently researched the cheapest way from London to Paris, and found that the coach was by far the thriftiest option when booked at short-notice – though significant savings could be made on plane and train travel with advance tickets.
Most coaches now provide free Wi-Fi (signal permitting), and if you manage to book a window seat, you would certainly see some pretty sights along the way – so if you’re planning a personal farewell tour on a budget, the Continent is yours for the taking.
