Viral TikTok doctor shows how to "hack your brain to cool down" in a heatwave

The UK is hot right now, with some places expected to reach up to 40 degrees this week. But, whilst the thought of such warm temperatures whilst you're sunning yourself at the beach sounds heavenly, the same can't be said for when you're going about your daily bizniz. Yep, we're working from home in our undies too.

Thankfully, social media is full of tips and tricks to help you beat the heat – from this viral hack to make your fan feel colder to this explanation on why heat in the UK feels hotter than abroad. And the latest heatwave hack making the rounds on TikTok comes from Dr Karan Raj, who just revealed the clever way to turn your body's internal thermostat down.

"Here's a cool trick where you can hack your brain to cool down," the expert told his 4.9 million followers. "Your body regulates the temperature using this peanut shaped section of the brain – the hypothalamus. This region of the brain basically acts like a thermostat, it can turn the temperature up or down, depending on various factors, such as temperature of the skin."

Dr Raj went on: "There are certain parts of the skin which can influence the hypothalamus more than others. These areas are known as pulse points. These pulse points are areas where the blood vessels are so close to the skin that you can feel them."

Continuing on to explain how these pulse points can impact your body's internal thermostat, the expert added, "When you want to lower your body temperature, chill any of these pulse points with cold water. This then tricks your brain into turning down the thermostat."

As for which pulse points are easiest to find, Dr Raj points to the radial artery on the inside of your wrist, the carotid artery in your neck and the temporal artery around your temples.

And it seems his hack is a winner, as plenty of chilled-out TikTokers took to the comments section to say how well it works.

"I always run cold water on my wrist when I'm hot. A dinner lady told me about the trick when I was at primary school in the 1980s," one person said in response to the clip, as another follower commented: "Ty bossman, very helpful!"

A third follower added, "Thank you so much, we are all sitting with our feet in buckets of cold water while camping... and we all feel cooler!"
