Last night, BBC One aired The Coronation a documentary on Queen Elizabeth II‘s 1953 ceremony and the programme offered viewers a rare insight into the history of the monarchy’s Crown Jewels.

Unsurprisingly, the programme proved a hit and we can’t help but wonder if its success is down to award-winning series, The Crown.

Let’s not forget, that ever since the show landed on Netflix, the nation has fallen victim to a reignited interest in the Royal Family and even Her Majesty is rumoured to have given the award-winning series a cheeky watch.

So the 91-year-old seemingly jumped at the opportunity to share her thoughts on the coronation in light of its 65th anniversary and viewers were surprised by Her Majesty’s quick-wit and blasé ‘man-handling’ of the Imperial State Crown.

While the show’s presenters donned gloves to daintily examine the ceremonial regalia, the Queen wasted no time in jostling with the hefty headgear.

And the nation looked on in astonishment with many royal fans taking to Twitter to express their amusement:

And viewers were further delighted by Her Majesty’s candid thoughts on the historical day.

When asked where her children Prince Charles and Princess Anne were during the momentous occasion, she candidly replied: “No idea, I wasn’t there”.

For those of you who missed the highly-anticipated documentary, you can catch up on BBC iPlayer.
