Victoria Beckham reveals her androgynous NYFW collection was inspired by British fashion

Victoria Beckham has revealed the inspiration behind her latest collection was her return to Britain.

The fashion designer, whose New York Fashion Week show once again went down a storm with fashion critics, said the androgynous theme seen throughout her range shows her British influences.

She said: "I am spending a lot more time in England now.

"And yes, I have become a bit of a material nerd. I've spent a lot of time in Europe, but it is about fabric, texture, British heritage tweeds and knitwear from Scotland - and I took a lot of inspiration from men's clothes."

Victoria's autumn/winter 2013 collection showcased a heavy use of tailoring, with flattering knee-length hemlines, ankle-skimming trousers and even tuxedo jackets forming part of the collection.

The colour palette was deliberately more conservative than we've seen in her previous shows, with black and caramel tones helping to highlight the cut and fall of the fabrics.

The only injection of colour came in the form of a few cobalt-blue pieces and a red handbag - which was carried underneath rather than by the straps, as the designer is often seen doing.

The play on the androgynous trend was clearly what Victoria was trying to convey too, as she went on to reveal 'mannish' is how she'd describe the collection.

"I prefer the word mannish," she added.

"I wanted to translate those shapes into a feminine silhouette, so there is volume in the coats and that tuxedo shape, but turned into a gilet."

Victoria Beckham, who has only designed clothes for four years, was the highlight of NYFW yesterday with her latest collection.

Just a select group of critics witnessed the catwalk too, with David Beckham - who was seen looking after baby Harper backstage - and US Vogue editor Anna Wintour among them.

Other designers to show over the weekend were Alexander Wang, Jason Wu, Zac Posen and Diane von Furstenberg.
