Prince George will one day inherit the throne, but that's not to say he's the only Cambridge kid that has got something to look forward to in the future. In fact, Princess Charlotte will do her fair share of inheriting too, with priceless heirlooms and impressive titles still to come – particularly one very rare title, which only seven other royals have ever held. So, what is this rare royal title that could find itself being bestowed to Princess Charlotte? And, more interestingly, who currently has it?
The title in question is Princess Royal, which was bestowed by the Queen to her only daughter Princess Anne back in 1987. She's only the seventh person to have ever had the title, since it was established in 1642 by Charles I for his daughter Princess Mary. The title has typically been bestowed to the eldest daughter of the sovereign, however, that's not to say it's automatically handed out. That's because the title is held for life, even if the Princess Royal outlives her parent, the monarch.
As such, prior to being bestowed onto Princess Anne, the title was last held by Princess Mary – the only daughter of King George V and Queen Mary. She died in 1965, which is why King George VI was unable to give his eldest daughter, Princess Elizabeth (who is now the Queen) the title, because her aunt was still in possession of it at the time. After Princess Mary's death, the title remained vacant for 22 years, until the Queen handed it to Anne in the late 1980s.
That means, the title may eventually pass down to Princess Charlotte – given that her father, Prince William, will one day sit on the throne as sovereign.
But, Charlotte isn't the only royal who might see their title change in the coming years. In fact, her mother Kate Middleton is set to hand back her Duchess of Cambridge title to become the Princess of Wales when Prince Charles becomes King. The change will be bittersweet for Prince William, whose mother, Princess Diana, was the last person to hold the Princess of Wales title.
"I’m sure it’ll be a bit of a bittersweet moment" a source told The Telegraph. "This is her [Diana's] son and his wife, so in some ways it will be coming full circle – but it will also be a poignant reminder of what we all lost."
