A heating expert has revealed that millions of us are using our thermostat wrongly and that it's costing us more than it should.

As temperatures continue to drop, it's tempting to dial up the thermostat to get an instant boost of heat into your house. And when it gets too warm, we are guilty of just turning it down a few degrees.

But Dominic Lees-Bell from Only Radiators, said that it's a costly way to control your heating. And he explained that simply cranking up the thermostat won't heat up your house any faster, reports the Mirror.

Dominic explained that the thermostat is there to instruct the boiler to keep heating until it reaches the temperature you have set and to then maintain the radiators at that temperature. For example, if you set your thermostat to 20 degrees, it will heat your home to that temperature.

He said while it was temping to turn up the thermostat if you are feeling a bit cold, it's pointless.

He explained: "Your thermostat is, instead, a limiter, not an accelerator. A minimum and a maximum temperature limiter rolled into one."

"If you're cold and you turn your thermostat up to 30C in an attempt to make your home hotter, you're essentially saying to your boiler, 'you couldn't reach 20C, so give 30C a try' with the rate of heating staying the same."

Dominic said it was like someone telling you to run 20 miles, but when you collapse at the 10 mile mark, they move the finish line to 30 miles.

He advises instead of cranking up the thermostat, to allow the central heating to reach its normal temperature. And he said this could help to reduce the cost of your heating too.
