The professionals at Bust the Dust have named an effective and budget-friendly hack to tackle the limescale inside our toilets.
Limescale, primarily made up of calcium carbonate, builds up in regions with hard water.
In toilets, it appears as stubborn brown or green stains that are often challenging to eliminate with regular cleaning products. If ignored, these stains can not only make your bathroom look unclean, but also lead to plumbing problems over time.
Clare from Bust the Dust recommends a simple yet powerful method to eliminate limescale, by using the fizzy drink cola. This is because the popular beverage contains acids like citric, tartaric and phosphoric, which are effective in dissolving limescale without the need for any harsh chemicals.
To do this, you will need a 2-litre bottle of full sugar cola, which can be bought at Tesco or Asda for as little as 70p. It does not need to be the brand coca cola; it can be any cheap full fat coke.
You will also need a toilet brush for scrubbing the toilet after the cola has done its thing.
Start by removing as much water from the toilet bowl, as possible. This can be down by turning off the water supply and flushing the toilet or using a cup to scoop out the water. This allows the cola to concentrate on the areas full of limescale.
Pour the entire 2-litre bottle of cola into the toilet bowl, making sure it covers the stained areas.
Allow the fizzy drink to sit in the bowl overnight, as the acids inside the cola will work to break down the limescale.
The next morning, put on rubber gloves and use the toilet brush to scrub at the bowl, focusing on the areas with persistent stains.
After this, you should flush the toilet to make sure the loosened limescale and remaining cola rinses away.
