The Umbrella Academy is way, way up there when it comes to Netflix shows that have stolen our attention (and hours of our time), and it's safe to say we're huge fans of the Hargreeves siblings. But with season two ending with some major clues pointing to what will happen next, the question on everyone's lips was of course, will we get an Umbrella Academy season three, and when? Well, back in November 2020, the lovely lot over at Netflix confirmed there will indeed be a season three. Yes!

Is there an Umbrella Academy season 3 trailer?

Indeed there is! The official season three trailer dropped on 19th May 2022, and there's lots to get excited about.

After plenty of plot discussion, the trailer has given us an official look at what's about to do down in S3, and it looks like things are going to get even more complicated. So, yeah, strap yourselves in for this one:

The new trailer reveals that, after returning back to 2019 from 1963 (after, you know, stopping the end of the world), our fave superhero siblings had actually entered a different reality. And things are looking *different*: enter, the Sparrow Academy (more on that below). Plus, there's an epic soundtrack to boot. Can't. Wait.

When is The Umbrella Academy season 3 released?

"☂️June 22, 2022 🐦", the official Instagram account wrote, alongside some sneak previews of the cast in character. This is so exciting!

Fans were obviously all over the news, with one writing, "THIS LOOKS SO GOOD HELLO" and another putting, "I CAN'T WAIT." A third said, "SO EXCITED. CANT WAIT TO SEE THE BIRDIES AND BRELLIES 🐦 ☂"

Do you think all those caps think people are excited?

What do we know about The Umbrella Academy season 3?

Elliot Page took to Instagram on 20th August 2021 to reveal they had almost finished filming. "Mornin ☀️," he wrote, adding: "….almost done 🎥 S3 ☂" Exciting!

Elliot, Tom Hopper, and Emmy Raver-Lampman – who play Vanya, Luther, and Allison - revealed exciting details about filming season three in mid-May 2021. "We all know each other so well now, and we know the characters so well – and we know each others' characters so well – there's a real ease in our scenes with each other," Tom explained about filming.

"It's just becoming more and more fun to do, and the words on the page are great already, you know?"

Emmy continued that she has "no idea what's gonna happen at the end", adding, "[It's] like the first time, being in it and filming and not knowing what the end goal is. It's great, I'm here for it."

The latest bit of info we have comes from series showrunner Steve Blackman who gave us quite a big season 3 teaser over on Instagram, sharing all the episode titles for the upcoming season. We're so ready to read into these...

As of 16th Feb 2022 Netflix has also given us even more info with a pretty compelling series of pictures posted on Instagram. Along with the caption, "Grab your brollies. S3 is coming," the streamer posted a series of images of the show's characters with their backs to the camera holding umbrellas.

Speaking for all of us one person simply commented, "But when?" and while Netflix has yet to respond to the remark, we're just glad someone is asking the important questions. Plus, if the teaser and caption are anything to go by it looks like series 3 could be coming soon. Eeee!

When did Netflix confirm an Umbrella Academy Season 3?

On November 10th 2020 Netflix delivered us the very exciting news that The Umbrella Academy will return for a third season. The series will be back with another 10 one-hour episodes, with production kicking off in February 2021 in Toronto, Canada. The cast set to reprise their roles include Elliot Page, Tom Hopper, David Castañeda, Emmy Raver-Lampman, Robert Sheehan, Aidan Gallagher, Justin H. Min, Ritu Arya, and Colm Feore.

On February 16th, Elliot teased the start of filming with a post on Instagram showing what appears to be an actor's set chair featuring the sparrow academy logo. "Omg we're back again," he wrote... exciting! Meanwhile, Justin also teased a first-look at the new sparrow academy in their matching tracksuits, adding: "Let the games begin."

How did The Umbrella Academy Season 2 end?

*Spoilers* The ending of season two of The Umbrella Academy left some pretty major clues surrounding what could happen next. The second season's finale set the scene for a new adventure for the super-powered Hargreeves family, and it also introduced a parallel school for young heroes called the Sparrow Academy.

Ending on a cliffhanger, the heroes managed to fight off The Handler and her Commission minions, with Herb, the new head of the Commission, helping the Hargreeves siblings return to 2019, the year they left at the end of season one.

However, the 2019 they wind up in looks a whole lot different to the one they left, paving the way for a pretty interesting season three.

For one, the Umbrella Academy mansion, which Dark Vanya destroyed at the end of season one is still in tact, and their brother Ben, who had previously died 17 years ago is now alive, along with their dad Reginald Hargreeves.

However, in a huge plot twist, neither Ben or Reginald recognise the rest of the group - and it's revealed that they're not in the home of the Umbrella Academy, but in fact the Sparrow Academy. Yikes.

What is the Sparrow Academy?

With season two ending on the huge Sparrow Academy cliffhanger, it always seemed likely that the Sparrow Academy would play a big part in season three - and now we have the confirmation. On 11th January, Netflix revealed the seven actors who will be playing the members of the Sparrow Academy.

  • Sparrow 1: Justin Cornwell (Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey, I Am the Night) will play Marcus

"Honest, virtuous, and demanding, Marcus keeps the family together. Graceful but lethal, calculated but compassionate, he is as smart as he is strong... He oozes confidence and leadership without ever having to raise his voice."

  • Sparrow 2: Justin H. Min (After Yang, The Umbrella Academy) will play Ben

"This is not the sweet Ben we know and love. This Ben is a Machiavellian tactician, wrapped up in a pretty boy body with a rumbling inner-squid. Vicious, pragmatic, and hyper-vigilant— Ben is determined to gain his status as the leader at all costs."

  • Sparrow 3: Britne Oldford (The Path, Hunters) will play Fei

"She comes across as a misanthrope who would rather be alone than spend even a second with you. But truth be told, Fei wishes she had a friend. Most of the time, Fei is the smartest person in the room and willing to work things out. But if you cross her there’s no looking back because Fei won’t stop until the job is done."

  • Sparrow 4: Jake Epstein (Designated Survivor, Suits) will play Alphonso

"Years of crime fighting have left his face and body with countless visual reminders of his battles. To compensate, Alphonso is armed with a caustic and biting sense of humour. The only thing he likes better than verbally battering anyone foolish enough to get in his face, is a good pizza and a six-pack of beer."

  • Sparrow 5: Genesis Rodriguez (The Fugitive, Big Hero 6) will play Sloane

"A romantic and a dreamer who feels a higher cosmic calling leaving her eager to see the world and experience a life beyond her upbringing. But obligations to her family keep Sloane tethered to the Academy, as does her fear of crossing the family line. But Sloane has plans… and one day she might just be brave enough to act on them."

  • Sparrow 6: Cazzie David (86’ed, NY Times best-selling author of No One Asked for This) will play Jayme

"Jayme is a loner hidden under a hoodie. She doesn’t say much because she doesn’t have to. Jayme has a fear-inducing snarl. Catch a glimpse of it, and you’ll run across the street to avoid what follows. Smart and sharp as a knife, she spends most of her time hanging with Alphonso, her only friend."

  • Sparrow 7: Is a telekinetic cube called Christopher

"Christopher is a telekinetic cube of unknown origin. He can turn the room freezing cold and induce paralysing fear. He acts as the Sparrows’ consulted oracle who hands out incredible advice, serves as the family mediator and is treated by the Sparrows like any other sibling."

Meanwhile, a fourth volume of the comic is also in the works, titled 'Sparrow Academy' and fans reckon the new comic's plot will also provide some pointers for season three of the show.

According to the comic's writer Gerard Way, "The series finally starts to answer the question: ‘What about the other babies born on that day, in that moment?’ The Umbrella Academy siblings are not alone in the world anymore."

One theory is that Reginald Hargreeves adopted more than just the seven special kids, and trained the new group as the Sparrow Academy. However, it's not clear yet when the 'Sparrow Academy' comics will be released.

On 24 November, showrunner Steve Blackman revealed that we'd be introduced to the Sparrow Academy in the season 3 premiere. The episode is titled 'Meet the Family' and is co-written by Blackman and Lost Girl's Michelle Lovretta.

Exciting.
