On Thursday, Curtis Blaydes warned his followers on Twitter not to tune into the main event if they were hoping to watch a 25-minute stand up war.
“I fully intend on ragdolling my opponent just figured I’d let y’all know ahead of time,” tweeted Blaydes, the No. 3 ranked UFC heavyweight.
On Saturday, Blaydes delivered on his promise and wrestled Alexander Volkanovski for five rounds, scoring a unanimous decision victory while earning the UFC record for most takedowns in a fight by a heavyweight (14).
“It's always a good experience to know you can go five,” Blaydes said after the fight. “ ... I know I've got to work on my conditioning after the third round. I'm happy with the win, Volkov's legit, and I'm one step closer to a title shot.”
Blaydes’ title shot will have to wait until after Daniel Cormier and heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic settle their trilogy in August, with the winner likely facing No. 2 ranked heavyweight Francis Ngannou, who has already beat Blaydes twice.
With the win, Blaydes improves to 14-2-1 in his career while Volkov drops to 31-8.
